How BIG of a home do you really need?

Are you about to make the move to a larger home? Have you ever thought of what type of home or how big of a house you really need?
Here are a few questions that you may want to ask yourself before starting the house-hunting process.

  1. HOW MANY BEDROOMS DO YOU NEED?

This will be the determining factor for a lot of people. Obviously, you will want your own bedroom. Can your kids share a room or will they need their own? This may depend on their age or how much space the individually need. Will you be having guests over often? You may want to consider a spare room for your out of town relatives that stop by every weekend.

  1. WILL THIS BE YOUR FOREVER HOME?

When looking for a home it’s hard to predict where you will be financially and personally in 5-10 years. When buying a house, we mostly try to think of this as the home where we will be for the rest of our lives. In most cases people will move within a few years. Really think about where you might be and if you need all the extra space. Will this home do for the time being? Remember, you can always upgrade in the future. You are never stuck at one home forever.

  1. PETS? HOW MUCH SPACE DO THEY NEED?

Pets are some of the most joyous family members we have. They will also need their own space and a place to run around. Have a large dog?  Unless you don’t mind going for walks or to the dog park every day, a backyard might be something to consider for your furry friend when looking for a home.

  1. DOES THE HOME FEEL SPACIOUS?

Even small homes can feel spacious. It’s all in how you decorate and place furniture. You want to make sure you have enough room to move around and not get in everyone’s way. Always view the home in person and don’t rely to heavily on the exact square footage. Even if a home has a large square footage, remember that this is not only the common space and bedrooms. Square footage will also include the hallways and entrances.

  1. WHAT ARE YOUR PRIORITIES?

This will be different for everyone. Its best to make a list of what you actually need and what you would like. Some of the items on your want list may have to take a step back until your next home. Get all your family members together and have them write down their own needs/wants list and then take a look and see what everyone has in common. Just remember, a home theater would be nice but do you really need it?

Searching for the perfect dream home can be a challenge. Big or small, a home will be a place where you make memories that will last a lifetime. The size of the home does not create the happiness, its what’s inside it that counts.
